Calculate Your GPA
Calculate your GPA
The grade point average (GPA) is a general measure of the student’s academic achievement. The GPA is determined by dividing the total number of quality points earned by the total number of GPA hours attempted. Quality points and GPA hours are derived only from courses graded “A” through “F” or “WF” (withdraw failing - counts the same as an "F"). Courses graded “S/U” are not used in the GPA calculation. When courses are graded "P/F", a grade of "P" will not be used in the GPA calculation, but a grade of "F" will be used in the GPA calculation. GPAs are not rounded - they are truncated to the hundredths place (eg. if you divide 163.1 quality points by 41 GPA hours, you will get 3.978. This GPA will be considered 3.97).
Quality Points ÷ GPA Hours = GPA

What are quality points?
Quality points are points awarded for each course graded A, A-, B+, B, B-, C+, C, C-, D+, D, D-, F, or WF. The chart below shows the number of quality points assigned to each grade.
|Grade||Credit Hours (courses graded A-F)|
|1 sh||2 sh||3 sh||4 sh||5 sh|
What are GPA hours?
GPA hours are semester hours attempted for courses which receive a grade of “A” through “F”. Courses graded “P/F” or “S/U” do not earn quality points and are not used to calculate your GPA.
What if I’m repeating a course?
Beginning Fall 2014, if a course is repeated, the initial grade earned in the course will be automatically excluded from the cumulative GPA FOR THE FIRST FOUR REPEATED COURSES unless the student submits a request not to exclude the grade by the end of the drop/add period of the term in which the course is being repeated. Any courses repeated prior to Fall 2014 which had a grade exclusion are counted in the total of four grade exclusions allowed.
How do I calculate my major GPA?
If you want to include your major GPA on your resume, we recommend that you do this in one of two ways. You can use your College of Business GPA as your major GPA (include all business courses taken) or you can use only the required courses and required electives in your major (do not include COB electives or courses in the COB core).
For example, a marketing major would use the 15 semester hours of required marketing courses and the 3 semester hours of marketing electives. A marketing major would not include MKT 3050 from the COB core or any COB electives even if they are Marketing courses. Again, once you have the total quality points and GPA hours for all courses that will be included, use the GPA formula to determine your major GPA. If you have taken a course more than once, use only the quality points and GPA hours from the last time the course was taken.
NOTE: In order to graduate, marketing majors must have a 2.0 GPA in the eighteen (18) hours of marketing courses in the major (fifteen semester hours of required marketing courses and three semester hours of marketing electives); accounting majors must have a 2.0 GPA in the twenty-seven (27) hours of accounting courses in the major (twenty-one hours of required accounting courses and six hours of accounting electives); computer information systems majors under must have a 2.5 GPA in the twenty-four (24) hours of required and elective CIS course for the major (not including CIS 2050) and International Business majors must have a 2.0 GPA in the fifteen (15) hours of foreign language courses required for the major/concentration.
How do I calculate my College of Business GPA?
To calculate your College of Business GPA, get the quality points and GPA hours for all courses that begin with ACC, BUS, CIS, ECO, FIN, HCM (taken prior to fall 2010), HOS, LAW, MGT, MKT, POM and SCM. Use the GPA formula to determine your College of Business GPA. If you have taken a course more than once, use only the QPs and QHs from the last time the course was taken. To graduate from ASU with a business major, you must have a minimum 2.0 COB GPA.
